Nobody Knows THIS Truth Except You
What do you want to do when you grow up?
From a young age, we've been given other people's limits to wear on our heads like miner lights guiding us in one direction.
It starts with the loaded question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" We get it from our parents, teachers, aunts and uncles. And they ask us with such passion and enthusiasm, we are pressured to answer immediately so we don't let them down.
An astronaut. A firefighter. A nurse. The President.
We are allowed to pick one thing like it's a choice for dinner. If we picked more than one, we got, "But what do you really want to do?" or questions that helped us narrow it down to one thing. We don't encourage our kids to say I want to do many things. I want to be a professional skateboarder. Write books. Travel the world. Open a Crossfit box. And adopt some kids.
Today, many of us struggle with our career path because we still believe this. We should be a successful __________ .
No you shouldn't.
As a matter of fact, you should be pursuing a few things. I say like five or so and get obsessive about them. Then figure out how they all tie into each other to bring you joy, security, and fulfillment. It's not about what you do. It's about how you want to live your life, creating a unique exciting existence that is custom to you and what makes you happy.
In my 20's, I wanted to be movie director. That's it. All eggs in that one basket. The odds were not in my favor and my state and belief about self was a direct reflection of that. In my early 30's, I wanted to be a therapist. Simple. A practice practice. I accomplished that goal but still wasn't quite happy. Now in my early 40's, I've realized that I don't just want to do one thing. I want to continue to create a platform that helps people and connects them with other Catalysts. I want my own Crossfit box with my own unique spin. I want to coach and work in ways that "normal" coaches don't. I want to have my own talk show. I want to travel parts of the world I've only seen pictures of on Tumblr. I want to overcome my fear of animals. I want to write more books. Build more apps. Design my own house. I want to be able to eat breakfast at a diner every single day.
Take off your miner's light. It's what will get you lost. It's not about what you want to be. It's about how you want to live.
When you pull from that, the activities / adventures will reveal themselves to you organically. Your path will be shown and if you don't take steps forward, you will always be on a career path. Because that's how the world has programmed us. It's old school bullshit we were fed and it limits our potential. Create many paths. Plant many seeds. Spin many plates. Do it in harmony and you have magic.
No one knows what you can do.
Aren't you curious to find out? I don't know about you but I am.
